CrossFit without knowing what it is

Learn · 1 November 2026

In 2018/2019 I started CrossFit without really knowing what CrossFit is. I wanted to find out what I could do.

I had no sports background. I never did a really intense sport. When I did sport, the playground was the fun part for me: messing around, playing with a ball, basketball, nothing very intense. Team sports always grabbed me more than anything you do alone.

I found CrossFit through Netflix, through a series about the CrossFit Games. There I saw how many different disciplines are part of it, and that the athletes don't know beforehand what's coming. The idea behind it: be prepared for the unknown.

It took me a while to understand what grabbed me. Play is programmed into this sport. That's exactly why the CrossFit Games exist. You don't know what's coming, and that's the same playground I always liked about sport, just with a training plan behind it.

That was about eight years ago. Since then CrossFit has been part of my life. And I learned that health is a very good playground for learning things, and in the end a very cheap one.

What I take from it: the sport that kept me is the one where I get to play.

I didn't need to know what CrossFit is. I only needed to know that I want to play.
