Taxes in Germany

Why was the tax system one of my biggest levers, and what did it cost? · 3 November 2026

This episode is still to come. Understanding the German tax system was one of my biggest levers: the more you understand the business world, the more you learn about how our tax system works, and then you can play taxes as a strategic game. Early on I paid around 10,000 euros for a weekend workshop, because I did not want to just tell a tax advisor "do my accounting and that's it". The full story goes here, including the question of when money is tax and when it can be an investment in your own company. And if you are deciding whether to make more or stay where you are, there is an earlier question inside that one: what number are you really working with, once part of it is tax?

  • When the workshop was, roughly.
  • What I learned there that a tax advisor would not have told me.
  • The first tax bill or back payment that hurt, with rough numbers.
  • What I do differently now.
